While the maintenance of sex and recombination remains an intellectual challenge, the long term persistence of some asexuals is equally puzzling. What if anything can be learnt about the former issues by studying the latter and vice versa? There are multiple contrasting approaches to these problems: theoretical versus empirical approaches, genetical verses ecological explanations, field versus laboratory systems.
