Long-term Sabbatical
I propose to write a book, The Evolution of Sociality. A survey of societies - from slime molds through fish schools to avian family groups and primate troops to army ant colonies - will provide the foundation for this book. A prominent additional feature will be the construction of a conceptual framework to understand the evolution, integration, functioning, and common denominators of the diversity of animal societies. By the end of the book, readers will have a working knowledge of the natural history of a diverse, representative array of social behavior in animals, and they will be able to place that knowledge in a conceptual framework for understanding, synthesis, and future learning.
